Freaks: You’re One of Us Netflix Original Movie Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this movie review. Please read with caution.

On September 7, 2020, I watched the newest German superhero movie called Freaks: You’re One of Us currently streaming on Netflix. The story follows Wendy (Cornelia Gröschel)—a waitress at a fast-food diner—and her superhero journey. When she finds others like her though, she begins to unearth a conspiracy that has been keeping her people secret and docile.

I wouldn’t call this movie the most groundbreaking when it comes to the overdone superhero genre, but it was a comfortable watch with all the superhero tropes needed for a superhero origin story. The movie kept itself grounded for the most part, using Wendy’s real-life problems at home and work, which allowed the story to unfold at a natural pace.

Like what I thought about the Netflix Original series Get Even and its take on the teen drama genre, this is a superhero movie that would be nice to watch after a long day at work. For me, it was supposed to be a nice unwind after my weekly Writers Group meeting, but then it ended up being just a nice general unwind after a long Monday.

There were a lot of superhero clichés in this movie like nice guy turning into villain and a classic Marvel’s post-credit scene involving Wendy’s kid—which allowed the movie to end with a potential sequel in mind for the future, but the story itself was still good.

I would recommend this movie for those who have an hour and a half to kill. I’m excited to see if an actual sequel will be developed moving forward. I wouldn’t mind seeing where Wendy’s story goes from that interesting ending. Thanks for reading this movie review, everyone! I really appreciate the support! Let’s keep it going!
