Freaks: You’re One of Us Netflix Original Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 7, 2020, I watched the newest German superhero movie called Freaks: You’re One of Us currently streaming on Netflix. The story follows Wendy (Cornelia Gröschel)—a waitress at a fast-food diner—and her superhero journey. When she finds others like her though, she begins to unearth a conspiracy that has been keeping her people secret and docile.

On August 26, 2020, unOrdinary finished out the “Safe House Arc”. For those interested in my other unOrdinary story arc reviews, the link is here. I have been keeping up to date with the Webtoon since I started reading it back in May 2020. It’s been an interesting ten months that was made harder after I was forced to read weekly.

My Hero Academia Volume 23: “Our Brawl” (Chapters 213 through 224) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 9, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 23: “Our Brawl”. This volume concluded the joint battle training between Class 1-A and Class 1-B. The results of this training session also determined whether Hitoshi Shinso would transfer over to the Hero Course or not.

My Hero Academia Volume 21: “Why He Gets Back Up” (Chapters 189 through 200) Manga Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 21: “Why He Gets Back Up” (Chapters 189 through 200) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 7, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 21 and finished on August 8, 2020. August 8 also happens to be Endeavor’s—the newest number 1 hero and Shoto Todoroki’s father—birthday. As a result, reading this particular volume book was incredible. I have also entered manga-exclusive territory for the time being. The next few volumes—21 through 24 at least, maybe more—will be covered in My Hero Academia’s upcoming season 5. This is a spoiler warning for those who only read the anime.

My Hero Academia Volume 19: “School Festival” (Chapters 168 through 177) Manga Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 19: “School Festival” (Chapters 168 through 177) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 6, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 19 and finished the volume on August 7, 2020. Based on the cover page of My Hero Academia’s Volume 19, it was clear that the next arc was aiming for a light-hearted tone. After the darkness that shrouded the “Overhaul Arc” and the huge fallout that befell all the characters involved, the bright and fun “School Festival Arc” was much-needed.

My Hero Academia Volume 18: “Bright Future” (Chapters 158 through 167) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 5, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 18. Volume 18: “Bright Future” started with the epic conclusion to the “Overhaul Arc” and followed with its emotional aftermath. Deku and Overhaul battled it out for Eri, giving us a beautiful action sequence and Overhaul’s backstory on why he wanted to create this quirk-less society.

My Hero Academia Volume 17: “Lemillion” (Chapters 148 through 157) Manga Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 17: “Lemillion” (Chapters 148 through 157) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 5, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 17. This volume had made strides—making up for the slow pace in Volume 16: “Red Riot”—to set-up the climax of the “Overhaul Arc”. While there were valid flaws in this arc when it came to Chisaki’s Yakuza villain organization and their disinteresting members, the League of Villains’ limited involvement, and the exclusion of the female hero characters, the arc was mostly held-together by the series’ amazing ensemble cast. The characters were basically so amazing that they kept the plot from coming apart.

My Hero Academia Volume 16: “Red Riot” (Chapters 138 through 147) Manga Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 16: “Red Riot” (Chapters 138 through 147) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 4, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 16 and finished the manga book on August 5. While this volume continued falling into the anime chase sequence trope—losing party members one by one to “hold off enemies”—similar to Naruto’s “Sasuke Retrieval Arc”, I still found the backstories on Red Riot and Sunmaker intimately necessary, giving them the breathing room to become fleshed-out characters in their own right.

My Hero Academia Volume 15: “Fighting Fate” (Chapters 129 through 137) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 4, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 15. This volume explores the beginning of the anime’s season 4 in a post-All Might world, where most Pro Heroes need to take super careful precautions now rather than jump into the action recklessly like All Might—or his successor Deku—would normally do.

On August 3, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 14. The beginning of this volume was the conclusion to the anime’s season 3 while the second half set-up the beginning of season 4. I’m getting closer to catching up to where the anime series ended. Reading the manga series—more accurately, the physical volume books—has been a wonderful experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Message From the King Netflix Original Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 29, 2020, I watched Message From the King—starring the late Chadwick Boseman—to immerse myself in his brilliant work. Released as a Netflix Original on August 4, 2017, the movie follows Jacob King (Chadwick Boseman) traveling from Cape Town, South Africa to Los Angeles to find his missing sister Blanca (Sibongile Mlambo). Once he discovers what happened to her, King embarks on a vengeance mission to get justice.

Da 5 Bloods Netflix Original Movie Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Da 5 Bloods Netflix Original Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 28, 2020, I decided to watch Da 5 Bloods in honor of Chadwick Boseman’s death. After hearing he passed away that same night to colon cancer, I gave up sleep—which I do anyway for writing or reading—to watch this amazing movie on Netflix. I needed to know him for something other than Black Panther, which isn’t a bad thing at all, but Chad Boseman was more than just Marvel’s Black Superhero.

The God of High School Episode 9 “cursed / corner” Anime Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 9 “cursed / corner” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Picking up where the previous episode left off, Jin Mori went off on his own to rescue his grandfather Jin Taejin from his kidnappers. However, this put his team at a serious disadvantage for their next round. Since Han Daewi is suspended for the next couple fights, it’s up to Yoo Mira to hold off her opponent—and win—to give Jin Mori enough time to make it back in time. The next opponents are wearing the same robes as the main villains Nox, so the stakes are even higher to win this round.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 13 “Garudamon of the Crimson Wings” Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 13 “Garudamon of the Crimson Wings” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The latest Digimon Adventure Reboot episode almost felt like a filler episode due to the little plot momentum happening, but we were given more Sora so that was awesome and worthwhile. Going off what we saw in episode 11—the WereGarurumon episode—I’m really glad we saw more of Sora’s caring nature as its own thing rather than a barrier to Matt’s character development.
